Star item is just a name. You can call it hyphen item if you use hyphen(-) instead of star (*) for system generated items. How it works ? Suppose you have a model called COMP with various possible combinations. Now when a customer orders & a new item is created, system ‘ll create a new item That new item number can be COMP*12424(some unique sequence) star item COMP-12424(some unique sequence) hyphen item You define this delimiter (*) or (-) in BOM parameter So star or hyphen is basically your configured item
